Triphala, found in MAPI's Organic Digest Tone, is one of the most famous herbal compounds in ayurvedic medicine. Triphala literally means "three fruits." The three fruits contained in Triphala are Haritaki, Amalaki and Bibhitaki. Traditionally, Triphala comes in many different forms, including the Triphala tablets available from Maharishi Ayurveda Products International. Triphala can also be mixed with other herbs in compound formulations. Triphala Guggulu, for instance, is much more powerful than Guggulu alone. A powerful rasayana There is a saying in India that if a vaidya (ayurvedic expert) knows how to use Triphala properly, he can heal any disease. It is a highly revered rasayana in Maharishi Ayurveda. A rasayana is the most highly refined and powerful herbal and fruit combination in ayurveda, and is known to promote long life and vitality. A rasayana promotes ojas, the finest product of digestion that prevents disease, creates luster in the skin and rejuvenates the whole body. Besides nourishing the mind and body and promoting longevity, Triphala has many specific effects. It is particularly rejuvenating for the digestive tract, and is a rasayana for the eyes and the skin. Triphala, found in MAPI's Organic Digest Tone, balances Apana Vata, the subdosha of Vata that governs the colon, lower abdomen, menstrual flow and elimination. For most people Triphala is a mild laxative, and for that reason it is excellent for clearing toxins from the digestive system. In very rare cases it has a stronger laxative effect, but usually it is an ideal bowel cleanser precisely because of its mildness. In moderate doses it is gentle, and detoxifies the body slowly. Because it is slow, you can take Organic Digest Tone for longer periods of time, and then it has a deeply purifying effect. It goes deep into the physiology and releases the toxins at a much deeper level. Because it detoxifies the blood, muscle and fat tissues, it is excellent for preventing skin disease. And because it removes ama from the fat tissue, Organic Digest Tone also helps balance cholesterol. Triphala, found in MAPI's Organic Digest Tone, also purifies the urine and prevents urinary tract disease. It enhances all thirteen agnis (digestive fires), especially the main digestive fire in the stomach. It pacifies Kapha and Pitta, and if taken regularly, is a powerful anti-aging rasayana. The ingredients The first ingredient is Haritaki. This fruit is mentioned in almost all ayurvedic textbooks. Charaka goes so far as to say that Haritaki is as nourishing and useful for everyone as mother's milk. He mentions that it's a rasayana for the eyes and good for the digestive system. It helps enhance the absorption of nutrients in food. Haritaki is a yogavahini, which means that it cleanses the channels and is absorbed quickly by the body. In addition, the Charaka Samhita says that Haritaki is all-dosha balancing. Very few fruits and herbs have this designation. Amalaki, the second ingredient, is known as a divine plant in the ayurvedic materia medica. Amalaki is also a rasayana, which means that it has longevity-enhancing and disease-defying qualities. The Charaka Samhita says, "Amalaki is the best among rejuvenative herbs." Amalaki fruit contains the sweet, sour, bitter, astringent and pungent tastes. The only taste missing is salty. Because it contains five out of the six tastes, it is balancing to all three doshas. There are many excellent qualities in Amalaki. Amalaki helps purify toxins from the body, by enhancing food absorption. When your digestion becomes stronger, the food you eat is converted to nutrition rather than staying undigested and producing impurities. The unique thing about Amalaki is that it heightens digestion, yet is not heating. That's why it's traditionally considered one of the best herbs for balancing stomach acid. By enhancing digestion, it helps eliminate toxins from the body. It also does this by strengthening and stimulating the liver. Amalaki also helps elimination and helps relieve constipation, so you can see why Triphala also has that quality. Amalaki is an excellent source of Vitamin C, and is the most concentrated and absorbable source of the vitamin in the plant kingdom. It also contains other absorbable minerals that nourish the skin, the blood and the whole body. Because of its high content of Vitamin C, Amalaki is a powerful antioxidant. Bibhitaki, the final ingredient in Triphala, is also famous in the classical ayurvedic texts for its many good qualities. Charaka reports that it is ideal for pacifying both Pitta and Kapha, and that it cleanses the nutritive fluid (Rasa Dhatu), the blood, the muscle and the fat tissue. Sushruta points out the bhedana effect of this fruit, which means that because of its heating quality it clears the clogged channels almost as if drilling them clear. So now you can see why Triphala is so powerful: it's because the three fruits that make up the formula have remarkable abilities to cleanse impurities, tone the digestive tract, nurture the body and restore health. Quality Matters There are many brands of Triphala available in the market. The Council of Maharishi Ayurveda Physicians recommends that you look for top quality Triphala, found in MAPI's Organic Digest Tone. Settling for second-best can mean you do not derive the full range of benefits this amazing formula has to offer. At Maharishi Ayurveda, we are committed to only using the highest quality ingredients, and to upholding the authenticity of the ayurvedic tradition no matter what the cost. One example of this: the Haritaki fruit comes in seven different varieties. While all are beneficial, the Vijaya variety is mentioned by all the great ayurvedic seers as best variety to use, which in itself is rare, as not many fruits and herbs are universally acclaimed by all the seers. Vijaya is the only variety that is used in Maharishi Ayurveda's Triphala, because it is, quite simply, the best. But while it is the best, Vijaya is also the most rare. This scarcity makes it more expensive; in fact it is ten times the price of other varieties of Haritaki. We use fruits that are grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers or exposure to environmental pollutants, and harvest the fruits only at their peak, when they are ripe on the tree.

Being a vata-pitta type means that two doshas are predominant in your constitution. It is usually best to manage a dual dosha prakriti according to the season. In general as a vata-pitta, follow a vata-pacifying regimen during the fall and winter seasons, during the change of seasons and especially when the weather is cold and windy. Follow a pitta-pacifying regimen during the spring and summer and especially when the weather is warm. Read more about and below. The Qualities of Vata "Tatra ruksho laghu sheetah, khara sukshmaschalo nilah" The qualities of Vata are dry, light, cool, rough, subtle and mobile.— Ashtanga Hrdayam: Sutrasthana I:11 This Sanskrit line lists the main qualities of vata and provides a key to understanding what it means to have a predominantly vata prakriti. The main qualities of vata are dry, light, cool, rough, subtle, and mobile. So, having a vata-predominant prakriti means that these qualities express themselves generously throughout your mental, emotional, and physical make up. If you look back over the prakriti test, you can get a feel for how these qualities manifest themselves. A vata-predominant individual's strengths and weaknesses both reflect these qualities. In excess, the dry and rough qualities may manifest themselves as dry or brittle skin, lips, hair, nails, or bones (e.g. osteoporosis), as constipation, or as feeling "dry" emotionally. The "light" quality may manifest itself as giving you a lanky physique but excess lightness may manifest as being underweight, having muscle wasting, light bones, insomnia, or feeling "spacey" or insecure. The cold quality of vata may lead you to feel cold more easily than others around you, have cold hands and feet, and crave warmth. The subtle quality may express itself as being introverted, creative, and having an active fantasy life. The mobile quality may lead to a healthy ability to "multi-task" or, in excess, to scattered attention, a fidgety tendency, tremors, and nervousness. It may manifest as extremes; as in being very tall or very short or being drastically different weights at different times in your life. Like Increases Like A basic tenet of Ayurveda is "like increases like." Therefore, increasing the inherent qualities of vata will increase vata in your body, mind, and spirit. For example, because vata is inherently cool—cool weather, cool foods, the cool seasons and times of day, and even cool emotions can increase vata. Likewise, dry seasons, foods, environments, or emotions will increase the dry quality and thereby increase vata. Example: You are a vata individual. One of the qualities of vata is dryness. You live in a dry climate, like a desert, and you regularly snack on dry crackers. This added dryness adds to the dry quality of vata, which you already have plenty of. This usually increases vata and can lead to dry conditions like constipation or dry skin. This is an extreme example to illustrate the point. Tastes That Increase and Decrease Vata Along with the main qualities of vata, it is also helpful to know those tastes that increase and decrease vata. Nearly everywhere we look in nature, there are creatures engaging in some sort of consistent daily routine. The natural world at large is deeply influenced by the rhythms of nature – the rising and setting of the sun, the cycles of the seasons, and the underlying impulses directing the broader community of life. Vata is balanced by a diet of freshly cooked, whole foods that are soft or mushy in texture, rich in protein and fat, seasoned with a variety of warming spices, and served warm or hot. These foods calm vata by lubricating and nourishing the tissues, preserving moisture, and maintaining warmth. Pitta is balanced by a diet of fresh, whole foods (both cooked and raw) that are cooling, hearty, energizing, comparatively dry, and high in carbohydrates. These foods calm pitta by decreasing internal heat, preventing inflammation, balancing the digestive fire, grounding the body...

In the winter of 2009 I headed to Asia to study Ayurvedic massage in India for a month in the southern state of Kerala. India, more specifically Kerala, is becoming a mecca for people who want to learn Ayurvedic massage and medicine. Kerala is a beautiful southern tropical state, filled with beautiful back waters, coconut trees and extremely friendly and kind people. Kerala is beautiful and learning is such an environment is a plus! I chose one of the most respected schools I could find in Kannur The school of Ayurveda and Panchakarma. My teachers, Sapna and Rajesh were 2 young ayurvedic doctors who decided to dedicate their lives teaching foreign students. Their curriculum seemed interesting and the prices were appealing. We had 8 full hours of classes, daily, 4 hours of theory classes in the morning and 4 hours practice classes during the afternoon. When you study Ayurvedic massage in India, you’ll learn much more than when you’re taking a course back home. You’ll immerse in the culture, traditions and will have a much deeper understanding of the Ayurvedic massage and medicine context. The class had about 16 students, on high season which is a good number. We became good friends and practised a lot on each other during our free time. All students decided to be placed within shared apartments provided by the by the school for a monthly rent. The apartments were very comfy, simple and modern. During my stay the rent was quite affordable, I paid 50€ a month, sharing with another person with all the amenities included. Unfortunately, on the next month, they doubled the prices. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of both the theoretical and the practical classes. The teachers were used to explain very complex theories in a very simple way, easy for everyone to understand.

Have you ever wondered what actually accounts for differences in people? Why are some people hyperactive and fast moving, while others exude grace and stillness? Why can some people eat a five-course meal with ease, while others can barely finish a salad? Why are some people inherently joyous, while others carry the weight of the world on their shoulders? Modern genetics offers some insight, but what about the characteristics and idiosyncrasies that make every person unique? Ayurveda answers all of these questions with the Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The doshas are biological energies found throughout the human body and mind. They govern all physical and mental processes and provide every living being with an individual blueprint for health and fulfillment. The doshas derive from the Five Elements and their related properties. Vata is composed of Space and Air, Pitta of Fire and Water, and Kapha of Earth and Water. A person with a predominantly Vata constitution will have physical and mental qualities that reflect the elemental qualities of Space and Air. That is why Vata types are commonly quick thinking, thin, and fast moving. A Pitta type, on the other hand, will have qualities reflective of Fire and Water, such as a fiery personality and oily skin. A Kapha type will typically have a solid bodily frame and calm temperament, reflecting the underlying elements of Earth and Water. While one dosha predominates in most individuals, a second dosha typically has a strong influence. This is referred to as a dual-doshic constitution. To begin figuring out your own unique constitution, click here for a dosha self-test. The doshas are dynamic energies that constantly change in response to our actions, thoughts, emotions, the foods we eat, the seasons, and any other sensory inputs that feed our mind and body. When we live into the fulfillment of our individual natures, we naturally make lifestyle and dietary decisions that foster balance within our doshas. When we live against our intrinsic natures, we support unhealthy patterns that lead to physical and mental imbalances. If the proportion of doshas in your current state is close to your birth constitution, then your health will be vibrant. A divergence between these states, however, indicates a state of imbalance. Vikruti is the term used to describe this imbalanced deviation away from prakruti. In total, there are three primary doshic states: Balanced: All three doshas are present in their natural proportions; also referred to as “equilibrium.” Increased: A particular dosha is present in a greater-than-normal proportion; also referred to as an “aggravated” or “excess state.” Decreased: A particular dosha is present in a less-than-normal proportion; also referred to as a “reduced” or “depleted state.” Of the three states, the increased or aggravated state leads to the greatest number of imbalances. Such imbalances can arise from any number of influences, including following a dosha-aggravating diet or, more generally, carrying too much stress in life. You can initiate a restoration of balance, however, when you begin to understand both your unique constitutional make-up and how to harmonize your internal environment and its needs with the external world. We are most susceptible to imbalances related to our predominant dosha. If you’re a Pitta type, for example, you may experience heartburn (a common Pitta disorder) after eating spicy foods. The key to remember is that like increases like, while opposites create balance. By simply choosing cooling or more alkalizing foods, you can avoid heartburn, while also supporting your underlying make-up. Ayurveda offers specifically tailored recommendations for every individual, ranging from general lifestyle changes to the treatment of dis-ease (literally, an imbalance within our natural state of “ease”). For this reason, Ayurveda can truly be called a system of individualized health care, something remarkably different from the Western model’s “one-pill for all” approach. Since the doshas are used to detect imbalances before the manifestation of dis-ease, Ayurveda is also a complete system of preventative medicine. Vata derives from the elements of Space and Air and translates as “wind” or “that which moves things.” It is the energy of movement and the force governing all biological activity. Vata is often called the “King of the Doshas, ” since it governs the body’s greater life force and gives motion to Pitta and Kapha. Just as the wind in balance provides movement and expression to the natural world, the balanced Vata individual is active, creative, and gifted with a natural ability to express and communicate. When the wind in a Vata type rages like a hurricane, negative qualities quickly overshadow these positive attributes. Common signs of Vata imbalance include anxiety and bodily disorders related to dryness, such as dry skin and constipation. The qualities of Vata are dry, rough, light, cold, subtle, and mobile. A Vata individual will display physical and mental characteristics that reflect these qualities in both a balanced and an imbalanced state. The main locations of Vata in the body are the colon, thighs, bones, joints, ears, skin, brain, and nerve tissues. Physiologically, Vata governs anything related to movement, such as breathing, talking, nerve impulses, movements in the muscles and tissues, circulation, assimilation of food, elimination, urination, and menstruation. Psychologically, Vata governs...

In his video "Ayurveda for Detox, " Dr. Douillard focuses on using ayurvedic traditions to remove toxins from the body in order to feel healthier, happier and lighter. Feeling good allows us to show up for our lives with energy and strength. According to Dr. Douillard, any of these symptoms are considered conditions related to toxins in the body: being overweight having no energy, lethargic experiencing joints aches inflammation skin issues allergies poor immune system headaches water retention bloating sinus congestion The toxins that contribute to these conditions come from things like polluted air, toxins in the environment and processed foods. The liver, kidney and lymphatic system are constantly removing waste and toxins from our bodies. "Proper detox and understanding how nature detoxes, " Dr. Douillard says, "is critical to good health." The beautiful thing about Ayurveda is that it's the study of nature. Nature provides us harvest, medicine and tools for us to properly detox in every season. In winter, we have the natural ingredients available to eat warm soups and stews because it's cold and dry outside. In the spring, we harvest leafy greens, sprouts and berries. Nature provides these alkaline foods to detoxify the body. In the summer, we need energy foods - fresh fruits and vegetables. At the end of summer, we need to prepare for winter and detoxify the excess heat with things like apples, pears and pomegranates. According to Dr. Douillard, if you eat with the seasons, you get the natural benefits of detox. So if you focus on eating seasonal foods, you'll begin a cycle of naturally detoxing your body from toxins all the time! Dr. Douillard says that we have to realize that nature is trying its best to prevent the accumulation of toxins in our body. We have to understand how to live in harmony with the natural cycles of nature. He also tells us that there is a relationship between stress and how we detoxify. If we are under a lot of stress, the body will hold on to fat.

If you were to ask your friends how many times a week they did something to improve the health of their eyes, they'd probably say "none." Most people pay attention to their eyes only if they have a problem. Yet the hours spent watching TV and working on computers take their toll on eye health. According to Maharishi Ayurveda, the eyes are one of the most important organs in the body. All five elements play a role in maintaining eye health. Earth (prithivi) governs the muscular part of the eye, fire (tejas) rules the blood vessels, air (vayu) governs the color, water (apu) dominates the white area, and space (akasha) controls the tear ducts and channels. The eye is also governed by Alochaka Pitta, a subdosha of Pitta which becomes less balanced as we age. That's why it's important to care for your eyes throughout life. In the same way that Maharishi Ayurveda recommends preventing future health problems while you're still healthy, here are some simple things you can do to prevent eye disease and improve your vision. In general, you don't want to stare continuously at fixed objects in the distance. Blink periodically and look away at short intervals to keep from straining the eyes. At the same time, staring at the TV close up is one of the main causes of myopia (nearsightedness), so watch TV from at least ten feet away-not too near and not too far. Proper light is another factor in eye health, just like your mother told you. Avoid reading or working in either dim light or in bright sunlight. Staring fixedly in the distance or close-up is especially harmful in bright sunlight, especially if you're around water or reflecting objects. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes in bright sunlight, but not to drive or read with, as this will cause strain. One of the biggest enemies of the eyes is lack of sleep. If you have a tendency to stay up too late, try going to bed just fifteen minutes earlier. Gradually bring your bedtime into alignment with the ayurvedic routine-before 10:00. If you wake up in the night and can't fall back asleep, try Deep Rest. Each morning upon waking (either before or after using the toilet), fill your mouth with water and hold for a few seconds with your eyes closed. Spit it out and repeat 2-3 times. Splash your eyes and face with cool or slightly warm water 10-15 times. Repeat again in the evening when you return from work or school. Caution: Never use hot or icy water on the eyes. Also avoid abrupt temperature changes. For instance, if you're hot and sweaty, wait 10-15 minutes until your body adjusts before splashing cool water on your face and eyes. Yogic eye exercises, if done daily, are a gentle and effective way to prevent vision problems for developing. They are especially recommended for children, but adults can help prevent farsightedness from developing in middle age, and even people who wear glasses can prevent their vision from getting worse. If you already do yoga regularly, continue with your normal routine because most yogic exercises have a good effect on the eyes. Sit in the Sukhasana (easy pose) with your legs comfortably crossed and your spine, neck and head in a straight line. Look directly to the front at eye-level and breathe normally. This is the position of readiness. Move your eyes upward to the ceiling and stay for two seconds. Look downwards and stay for two seconds. Close your eyes for two seconds. Look toward the right side, as far as your eye will see, for two seconds. Look to the left side for two seconds. Look to the front again. Close your eyes for 6-8 seconds. This completes one round. Start with 2-3 rounds and increase up to four rounds.
